Liadov conjures magical landscapes while Tchaikovsky navigates anguish and triumph

Anatoly Liadov has become something of footnote in Russian music, yet his sumptuously orchestrated, impressionistic tone poem The Enchanted Lake is one of the defining works of late Romanticism. Composed 20 years earlier in 1888, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 5 uses some of the composer’s most beautiful music to take us from the darkest depths to life-affirming heights.

Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra is one of his most radiant and inventive works, combining the intimacy of chamber music with the brilliance of a concerto. Finally, Polonaise from Eugene Onegin captures the grandeur and sophistication of aristocratic society, bringing the opera’s dramatic world to life with dazzling orchestral colour and irresistible energy.
